The response from southernStar is one that is at best short-sighted and pessimistic.
As a volunteer and one who is working toward optimistic solutions, I don't see the volunteer system self-destructing but rather the multiple influences of life contributing to the diminishing numbers of volunteers.
Among these are economics (limited employment opportunities in rural areas and the need to have two income families), education (increased demands upon volunteers to become certified as providers and to maintain that level through continuing education) and demographics (fire and ems are best suited to individuals 18-40 years old and the numbers just aren't there).
The world of fire/ems is a highly-charged and often emotional place in which to perform (considering the work that shouldn't be a surprise). Some individuals don't work well within that type of environment. For those that do we are constantly rewarded with being able to help our fellow man....whether it is to provide reassurance through responding to a smoke alarm prompted by making popcorn or saving life and property. We do it because we want to....not because we have to.
The down side is a lack of understanding and/or appreciation for what we contribute to our communities by political leadership and often the very people we serve and protect.
Suicide? No. Homicide? No. I along with many others strive to find "solutions" and hope that rather than pointing a finger in blame at someone else we'll work together to enhance fire/rescue.
Let's all step up and these solutions together......everyone can start by asking your local Chief/Captain what you can do to help.
